High power magnification shows markedly atretic germinal centre with hyalinized traversing vessels. The cells in the surrounding mantle zone are arranged in concentric layers- onion skin appearance.

Though the exact cause of the disease is not known, the histological changes are believed to be related to higher level of production of IL-6 and VEGF.
