Blasts in AML are moderate to large sized with a high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio, irregular nuclear contour, and smooth chromatin with prominent or multiple nucleoli. These blasts typically have cytoplasm that appears pale or deep blue with a variably eosinophilic hue and Auer rods as is shown in the picture here.
