Peripheral blood smear showing a neutrophil filled with multiple yeast forms of Histoplasma capsulatum in a patient with HIV. In fulminant disseminated histoplasmosis, the yeast can be recognized as intracellular with basophilic cytoplasm retracted from the poorly stained, capsule-like cell wall (×1000, May Grunwald-Giemsa stain).
