The bone marrow aspirate smears (original magnification x100), revealed numerous extracellular and intracellular (within the macrophages) ovoid amastigotes. Note that amastigotes possess a nucleus and a rod shaped kinetoplast, a characteristic feature for Leishmania. Aspirate smears also showed mild increase in plasma cells. Rest of the marrow showed multilineage hematopoiesis with adequate maturation.
