A patient with multiple myeloma, whose disease included a thoracic plasmacytoma, presented with a pleural effusion. Needle aspiration yielded a bloody pleural effusion, which was collected in an EDTA tube. Cytospin revealed numerous plasma cells, including both mature and immature forms.
